Tai chi will help with Anxiety attacksTai chi will help with Anxiety attacks. For most of us the occasional feeling of mild anxiety is quite normal and rarely goes beyond this level. However for a large percentage of the population and a percentage that is steadily increasing, these feelings of mild anxiety develop into full blown anxiety attacks that can lead to feelings of dread, heart palpitations, outright terror, chest pains so severe that the person might think that they are having a heart attack and more. Recent research is finding that practicing Tai Chi can help.

As most of us know or at least think we know, Tai Chi is a form of martial arts that has been taught in China for centuries and is now taught in Portland Oregon and hundreds of other locations across the country. What you may not be aware of is that there are different forms of this martial art. Some Tai Chi classes do indeed focus on the physical combat side of this martial art, but there are others that focus more on promoting both mental and physical health and wellbeing.

Tai Chi is a very low impact form of exercise and is perfect even for those whose physical health prohibits most forms of physical exercise. The purpose of this martial art is to teach the student to practice a series of slow and very precise movements that require a high level of concentration, while at the same time teaching breathing and meditative practice that promote relaxation. The combination of the two not only strengthens the body, but has been proven to relieve anxiety.

Tai chi will help with Anxiety attacksOne thing that some might find confusing is that there are a number of different variations of Tai Chi being taught and practiced in the US as this martial art gains in popularity. You will find that there are a number of traditional classes, many that teach variations on these forms and of course numerous variations that are used to target specific purposes such as for those who have arthritis or the elderly. You may find that talking to your doctor, your therapist and a Tai Chi instructor can help you find the right form or teaching to help you reduce your anxiety levels and overcome the anxiety disorder you have been living with.

Keep in mind that before you begin any type of exercise program, you should talk to your doctor and make sure that you are physically healthy enough to participate. While Tai Chi in all of its forms is a very low impact form of exercise, there is always the potential for injury.
