There are things in life people become very passionate about. This is true of many different hobbies including the martial arts. In particular, those that have taken up BJJ grappling sessions are enormously enthused about learning as much as they can about the art and improving their skills. This is why they will attend class regularly to take part in “rolling” (grappling sparring) with a tremendous amount of enthusiasm. Some will even carry their enthusiasm to the tournament circuit to become regular competitors.
All of this enthusiasm towards BJJ grappling is definitely admirable but a bit of common sense also needs to be added to the equation here. Basically, you do not want the frequency of your training to be so significant that you undermine your ability to get the most out of it. In other words, you do not want to over train because doing so will actually make you a weaker competitor as opposed to a better one.
For those who might not be sure what overtraining refers to, the answer is overtraining can be considered any approach to training which is too long in duration, too high in intensity, or too frequently during the week. Remember, the human body has its limits and when you reach those limits you will discover your body starts to break down. At best, you may suffer from fatigue and mental sluggishness. At worst, you may outright injury yourself due to constantly being in an over trained state. Once again, the reason you want to take part in BJJ grappling sessions is because you wish to improve. When your approach to training clashes with your goals, you are not doing yourself any favors and you are not actually progressing forward with your skills.
Look at it this way, if you train six days a week and end up performing poorly, you will be behind the skill levels of those who may only be training one day a week. As bizarre as such a scenario may sound, it can often be a true scenario for many people.

There are no hard and fast rules regarding what will lead to an over trained state in BJJ grappling. Generally, it is believed if you limit your training to two to three days a week, you greatly reduce the potential to over train. Also, it would not hurt to take the attitude that if something does not feel right or you should tone things down, listen to your body and do so.
