It’s no secret that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is one of the most effective martial arts for self-defense that you will find. While other martial arts may offer plenty of value, we believe that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gives you the best opportunity to learn how to protect yourself from attackers. Here is a list of 5 different BJJ techniques that are especially effective for self-defense.

The Armbar

This is one of the most common techniques associated with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. When properly applied in a self-defense situation, the armbar will dislocate or break your opponents arm at the elbow. The shock and pain from the attacker experiences from the armbar should be enough to allow you to escape.

The Collar Choke

If the attacker is wearing a jacket or heavy shirt then you can apply a collar choke to end the attack. There are several variations of collar chokes that you will learn and practice in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class that are tremendously effective for self-defense.

The Sleeve Choke (Ezekiel)

This is a particularly effective choke for close range attacks. If you’re wearing a jacket or long-sleeve shirt then you can apply this technique to put the attacker to sleep. The sleeve choke also allows you to hold the attacker long enough to apply an even more powerful technique, like an armbar or triangle choke.

The Guard

Groundwork is the name of the game in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and the guard is one of the most important positions on the ground. When utilized effectively, the guard allows you to protect yourself from dangerous strikes or chokes from the attacker. This position also gives you several options for counterattacks that can end the fight from your back.

The Hip Toss

This is a common technique that uses the attacker’s own body weight and momentum to help you throw him to the ground. The hip toss is also an effective defense against different grabs and holds that an attacker my try. Once you have used the hip toss to take the attacker to the ground, you are then able to secure a dominant position and end the fight with a choke, joint lock or strikes.

There are an endless number of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques and positions that you can apply in a self-defense situation to protect yourself. When you attend BJJ class, you will have plenty of opportunities to practice these techniques with a training partner and gain a more thorough understanding of how they might work in a violent encounter.
