Tai Chi helping people deal with ADHDTai Chi helping people deal with ADHD. As most of us are aware, and particularly parents who have a child that has been diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), life can be a whirlwind of non-stop activity and emotions. Days and often large segments of the nights are filled with a roller coaster of surging emotions, the inability to stop being busy and endless frustration. While many medical professionals seem to think that prescription drugs such as Ritalin are the only cure, recent research is finding that attending Tai Chi classes such as those offered in Portland Oregon can offer a better and healthier alternative.

Tai Chi helping people deal with ADHD

According to a study that was presented during the American Psychiatric Association meeting held in May of 2010 in New Orleans, Louisiana, students who participated in a six week summer camp program of Tai Chi classes demonstrated a significant improvement in their ability to control their behavior. The report stated that there were definite beneficial effects in the group of adolescents’ ability to be able to control their hyperactivity.

At the same time the report went on to state that those adolescents who were diagnosed with ADHD not only had more control over their hyperactivity, but demonstrated an overall improvement in their cognitive skills as well. This report was generated by Dr. Peng Peng who is a resident in psychiatric medicine at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. However this is not the only study that has been conducted concerning the use of Tai Chi Chuan to help those diagnosed with both ADD and ADHD.

A recent study performed at the University Of Miami School Of Medicine also found that adolescents who took part in a five week course of two Tai Chi classes per week were found to show a significant decrease in anxiety levels, inappropriate behavior, daydreaming and overall hyperactivity along with improved conduct following the classes.

Over the course of the last quarter of a century the incidence of children being diagnosed with ADD or ADHD has risen significantly and the numbers continue to climb. Rather than turning to drugs that often have less than pleasant side effects and after consulting your child’s doctor, you may find that enrolling him or her in Tai Chi classes can help them learn to control their ADD/ADHD in a far more natural and effective manner that will bring peace both to their world and to yours.
