What Happens in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Training?

Jiu Jitsu Classes in PortlandBJJ in Portland

Our Portland, Oregon, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training places emphasis on form and technique over speed and strength. You’ll learn how to overpower your opponent with minimal force, thus helping you conserve your energy. Through repeated training and conditioning, you’ll find that the series of BJJ techniques have become ingrained in your muscle memory. You’ll be able to use your opponent’s force against them, giving you the ability to overcome people much stronger or bigger than yourself.

Endurance building is another key component of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. BJJ training involves strategy, which means that instructors will determine a set of methods appropriate for you based on your strengths and weaknesses. This gives you, the student, the greatest chances of success

What to Expect

Phase 1: Warm-Up

During the warm-up phase, you’ll be doing a variety of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training–specific conditioning exercises to develop whole-body strength and flexibility. This phase elevates the heart rate and warms up the muscles. You’ll also work on rolls, falls, and other agility training to ensure that you have the proper rolling technique. Not only are these drills great for your overall strength and cardio conditioning, but they will help you improve your coordination and over all body awareness.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a challenging art form that will push you mentally, physically and keep you engaged for years to come. These warm-up exercises are practiced both with partners and without. This will give you the option of taking your workouts home to improve your skills outside of class.

Phase 2: Focus On Technique

We train students to learn techniques that match their skill level. This will allow you to build a good solid foundation with your Jiu-Jitsu fundamentals which is the most important aspect of your training.

As your skill level grows so will the depth of your tool bag. Not only will you be learning how to improve your individual techniques, but you will start learning how to build combinations, setups, and counter techniques.

Training with partners of all skill levels will help you to accelerate at a fast pace. Some of your training partners will be more advanced than you. They will show you new ideas to help you refine your skillset and throw in a surprise or two as well. Other partners will be at your skill level and they will challenge you to apply the techniques you are learning and develop your game through repetition. Then as your game develops there will be students who have less skill than you, they will help you to polish up newer techniques and also teach you to be more multidimensional with the skills you already know. Having good training partners is the key to your development and learning how to benefit from all skill levels. While learning to become a good training partner will help you improve your game and make you a good partner for others.

Phase 3: Free Roll/Resistance Training

During this phase, we work on resistance. You’ll learn how to apply your skills against uncooperative opponents. At this point, you’ll rotate through several partners and test yourself against a variety of body types, skills, and strength levels. Though this is a free or focused rolling session, safety is always the highest priority. Note that this is not a required phase; you can join in this stage when you feel comfortable.

Benefits of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is much more than a sport or form of self-defense. It is a lifestyle and will help you transform your life in many positive ways. Jiu-jitsu has become the fastest growing martial art on the planet for many reasons. One, for the competitive advantages it gives to no holds barred fighters. Two, your fitness levels will reach levels you never thought were possible. Three, many of the lessons you will learn can be applied in other areas of your life. Here are a few of the many benefits of this awesome practice.

1. Fitness

One of the most common reasons people fail with losing weight, getting more flexible, building strength or just living a healthy lifestyle is that they get bored with what they are doing and do not stick with it. Jiu-Jitsu will keep you hungry always wanting to learn more.

2. Self- Defense

The art is very practical and will teach you where your weaknesses are as well as how to build your strengths making you competent, confident and well rounded with your defensive skills.

3. Stress Relief

It is fun. Talk to anyone who has been practicing for over a year and you likely see a smile on their face as they are telling you about how their training is going. This will feed over into other areas in your life off the mat.

4. Quality Friendships

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a close-quarter martial art you need to be up close and personal with your training partners. This will build trust while growing your knowledge together which always leads to building good long-term friendships.

5. Problem Solving and Critical Thinking

The strategy is the key to success with Jiu-Jitsu. Having a deep Jiu-Jitsu strategy is similar to having a deep understanding of the game of chess. This ability to see multiple angles in any situation will make you a leader and you will become someone others will look up to.

6. Humility and Patience

Something we could all use a little more of, right? Jiu-jitsu is challenging and it will teach you how to overcome obstacles and find solutions without having to force the outcome. To become good in Jiu-Jitsu you will have to learn how to check your ego. There will always be someone bigger, stronger and more skillful than you. You learn to compete with your self not always those around you.
